Richard Black “Koi Cue” on-line auction to benefit AKCA - Project KHV This is your opportunity to own one of Richard's remarkable and collectable pool cues and a totally unique piece of koi art and help the AKCA PROJECT KHV at the same time. Richard has
created the special koi pool cue shown in the photo above. He has generously
donated it to be auctioned by Project KHV with the hope it will inspire an
ardent koi and pool cue collector to acquire this very special piece of “koi/cue
art and benefit KHV research at the same time. “Koi Cue” is fashioned
from an ebony wood butt area, four axis machining was required to do the inlays
because they wrap around the cue up to 270 degrees. The inlays are of ivory,
blood wood and pau amarilla woods. The all ivory custom cap protector is
scrimshawed by Sandra Brady and has a carved Koi on the very top
and other Koi scrimshawed into the ivory around the sides of the cap.
One of the things I love most
about koi is the opportunity koi have provided to meet a wide assortment of
interesting and very special people. At a recent meeting of the Lone Star Koi
Club in Houston, Texas I met Richard and Ardis Black. About three years ago,
while Artie was on a trip
to Chicago, Richard took on the project of making a small pond for their patio.
At the bait store, where Richard bought some goldfish he saw some small Koi and
bought a couple of those also. They quickly grew into a larger size and Since
they enjoyed the original pond so much they decided to build a larger pond to
put water lilies in and added even larger koi. “We made all the typical wrong
pond mistakes”, said Richard. “I am finally building a proper koi pond, with the
advice of some of the more experienced koi people in the Lone Star Koi Club.
Richard and
Artie Black at a recent Lone Star Koi Club Show. Richard is a
retired sales and marketing executive that turned his hobby of pool cue-making
into a special art form almost thirty years ago. Cue art has only really
developed over the past 20 years, with Richard Black becoming one of the very
best known and highly sought after cue artists by knowledgeable collectors.
While pool aficionados and professionals all over the world know about Richard
Black and his special cues, an average person and occasional pool player may not
even know that these incredible pieces of cue art even exist.
One of the most
famous World Champion pool players, Steve Mizerak, has dedicated a book to
Richard. Richard also created a cue that has sold for more money than any cue
in history - $300,000! That is very serious recognition anyway you want to look
at it. Richard has no formal
training in wood working or art. He knew he had a special eye for design, but
needed to turn his design ideas into art. In 1974, Richard decided to begin
designing and making extra special pool cues. Richard looked around him for
inspiration drawing on sources as diverse as famous painters, Fabergé eggs,
Parker pens, and recently his new found love of koi. Richard Black has his
special cues displayed in several museums including the National Museum of
American History and the Smithsonian Institution. Diverse publications
including Esquire, Playboy, Texas Monthly, The New York Times, and the Chicago
Tribune have featured articles about Richard and his special cues. He has won
"Best of Show" and numerous other design and art awards at national and
international cue maker competitions.
The Art Museum of South East Texas recently featured a solo
exhibition for Richard Black Cues. Richard Black has served on the Board of Directors of both the ACA and the Academy of American Cue Art. His work has received enthusiastic acceptance among both tournament champions and pool’s top "gamesmen." He lives on a beautiful 10 acre natural retreat on Lake Houston in Texas, with a list of pets including koi who help inspire his cue making designs. Special thanks to Richard and
Ardis for this generous contribution. The Black Cue, “Koi
Cue” is currently on display at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas (until June 5)
and then may be part of a traveling exhibition to other museums around the
country. Koi Cue will be auctioned on
