AKCA – PROJECT KHV – UPDATE (04/05/07) WHAT IS KHV (Koi Herpes Virus)KHV is currently classified as a herpes type virus. KHV was diagnosed in koi & common carp in 1998. It quickly spread around the world. Other fish seem to be unaffected by KHV. KHV is believed to remain in infected fish for life, thus exposed/recovered fish should be considered very dangerous & potential carriers of KHV. Fish seem most susceptible at water temperatures of 72° - 81° F and causes 80%-100% mortality. It is thought KHV is transmitted by contact with affected fish/pond water. It is unknown what other methods of transmission may be involved. It is impossible to diagnose KHV on appearance. Death occurs very rapidly, starting within 24-48 hours after the first symptoms. KHV infection may produce severe gill damage, secondary bacterial, & parasitic infections. Infected fish often float near the surface, swim lethargically, & show respiratory distress & uncoordinated swimming. Shipping live or very fresh dead fish on ice to a lab that can test for KHV is the only way to get a definitive diagnosis. Little is known about KHV & much research needs to be done before new technology can be developed to help us protect our koi from KHV.

We Need Your Help Be careful when buying or moving koi Use quarantine minimum of 4 weeks at 72°-75°F If you have majority koi die off and no other fish affected and suspect KHV try to get definitive diagnosis & report source of infected koi if known Consider any koi/carp that has been infected with KHV or been in contact with any koi/carp that has been infected with KHV to be very dangerous and a likely carrier capable to transferring KHV to healthy koi In order to adequately fund targeted KHV research we need your personal, club, and professional contributions Next Steps Send a donation to AKCA – PROJECT KHV Today Bid at the On-Line Auctions on the website Post AKCA – PROJECT KHV updates in your club newsletters Thank You for your much needed assistance Please fill out and mail the form with your contribution.
