KOI HEALTH PROJECTS
OVERVIEW
The
Associated Koi Clubs of America (AKCA) has a history of funding projects
to promote koi health. Projects are currently being funded and
additional projects are being sought. The AKCA’s Koi Health Advisor (KHA)
program has been ongoing since 2001 and five annual classes of KHAs have
graduated thus far. AKCA has committed funds in excess of $200,000
to Koi health initiatives that include specific KHV projects. But
much more needs to be done to help protect our living jewels.
AKCA has matched the first $50,000 in donations to Project
KHV
This match
was dollar for dollar. The Project KHV has received over $100,000 in
donations to date and with AKCA’s matching funds, we have
$152,224
ready to be contributed to KHV research and education. See
Donor page.
100% of donations will be used for KHV projects
AKCA has
agreed to pay all administrative expenses incurred by this project. So
every dollar donated to this project will be a dollar contributed to KHV
research and/or education.
All Project KHV Committee members are volunteers. All grants
will include a letter stating that none of the money may be used for
administration costs by the institution, individual or group receiving
the grant.
AKCA - PROJECT KHV OBJECTIVES
The Project
seeks donations to support targeted KHV research and education projects
to develop new technologies and education projects directly related to
short-term control and prevention and longer-term eradication of KHV.
Potential areas of research that may receive grants include: Developing
and/or testing of KHV vaccines; other potential preventatives; more
accurate, available and economical tests for KHV; and recommendations to
appropriately deal with KHV exposed and/or “recovered” koi. Potential
education projects include: dealer and hobbyist information and training
on KHV identification, prevention and control of KHV; and a Best
Practices Certification program for dealers to intercept and destroy KHV
infected fish prior to distribution.
AKCA - Project KHV: Funded Research Projects
April, 2006 – Hartman, et al. group selected to prepare and
deliver KHV educational materials and seminars in various regions of the
U.S. The group intends to inform and better prepare dealers and
hobbyists to deal with the challenges of KHV control and prevention.
